Ontario PCs Taking Action to Protect Drivers on Highway 11/17

Ontario’s PC government is taking action to protect drivers and strengthen safety along the Highway 11/17 corridor, a critical link in the Trans-Canada network that supports supply chains, economic growth and access to jobs and services across Northern Ontario.

As part of our plan to protect Ontario, our government is cracking down on dangerous driving, increasing enforcement and making targeted investments to enhance Highway 11/17 and keep people and goods moving safely across the North.

We are:

  • Increasing Transportation Enforcement Officers in Northern Ontario
  • Expanding enforcement blitzes to ensure trucks are safe and drivers follow the rules
  • Deploying new mobile inspection units to strengthen truck safety and compliance
  • Rebuilding key inspection infrastructure, including the Hearst truck inspection station
  • Improving signage and installing portable message signs for better safety information
  • Expanding rest areas and truck parking for safer year-round travel
  • Advancing work to expand Highway 11/17 between Thunder Bay and Shabaqua

These actions will improve safety for drivers, strengthen supply chains and support northern communities that rely on these highways every day.

This builds on nearly $583 million in Northern Highways Program funding in 2025–26 to improve safety, reduce congestion and support economic growth across Northern Ontario.
